Here's an incredibly lucky find - a very early 1900s print of a painting by British watercolourist, William Matthison (1853–1926). His work featured regularly in the sepia-toned postcards of the Victorian era that we value so highly today.
This print is of Matthison's "The Flooded Lane", which I'm given to understand was painted in 1897. It beautifully captures the life of our forefathers, and is truly stunning in its detail and the mood it creates!
The print bears a copyright date of 1912. It was printed in Vienna. Matthison's signature is in the lower left-hand corner of the print.
For its age, the print is in reasonable condition. However, please note the following:
- The frame has been damaged by borer. They're long gone now, but there is visible damage on the front. The frame remains structurally strong enough to be hung.
- If you intend to use the frame, I would recommend replacing the backing boards with something sturdier.
- The print itself shows no sign of borer damage. However, it has yellowed with age and has also had water damage.
If you like the "very old and loved" look, then this print, together with its frame, would make a wonderfully warm and touching addition to your collection. Alternatively, in another frame, the print would be spectacular!
Dimensions:
- Frame: 835mm wide x 690mm tall x 45mm deep (excluding the eyelets)
- Print: 735mm wide x 495mm tall, mounted on cardboard circa 5mm thick

This magnificent print dates to the very early 1900s. It's of a watercolour painted, I believe, in 1897 by British artist William Matthison.
The painting is called "The Flooded Lane". It beautifully captures the lives of our forefathers.
Matthison's signature is on the bottom left-hand corner of the print. The typewritten print reads "PAINTED BY W. MATTHESON" (sic).
The print was copyrighted in 1912. It was printed in Vienna.
Here's a close-up of one part of the print. The detail is quite extraordinary.
Here's another close-up.
The frame would have been magnificent in its day. It still is beautiful, but has unfortunately been damaged by borer. The borer is long gone now.
Here's another corner of the frame, with borer damage on the lower edge. The frame itself remains sturdy enough to be hung.
Here's the top of the frame. You can see the borer damage as whitish marks in this photo.
The back of the frame is rough. If you intend to re-use the frame, I would recommend replacing the backing boards with something more sturdy.
Here's the back of one of the corners.
Here's a second back corner. You can see the holes left by the borer.
