late 1800's early 1900's? Cane and Timber Table

You are bidding on a genuine vintage square cane and timber table, possibly from around the late 1800's to early 1900's. It is approxiametely 53cm x 51.5cm and 72cm high. The table is a light brown and has the makers mark on the underside of the table which reads 'From Abe Nathan The Complete House Furniture Wagga'. The stamp is on both the upper and lower timber tops.

The following extract comes from the family history of the Ottolangui family and their migrations found on www.geocities.com

The youngest daughter of Aaron and Reyna, Emma (b.1859), married Abraham Nathan in the Great Synagogue in London in 1884. Both her parents had been dead for some 10 years, and census records show that Emma had been living since then with her sister Millie (Miriam Amelia) who had married David Romain in 1868. Soon after their marriage, Abraham and Emma Nathan also migrated to Melbourne, arriving in 1885. The post-gold boom had ended and soon a severe depression began in the southern colonies. However, Abraham came with some capital and in Australia he became a very successful businessman, who established furniture businesses in the thriving inland towns of Bendigo, Albury and Wagga, as well as in Melbourne.

The table shows wear on the top where the original finishing coat has worn off and the timber has split on it's join on the top piece. It is a clean split and could be restored, it can be seen in the photo, and it shows small wear and tear elsewhere as would be expected of such a piece. Overall it is in very good condition and looks great.

A: Hi, I'm not sure what the timber is...it looks like some kind of australian hardwood. It has had a kind of paint wash finish on it, not stain. The underside is still exposed timber and hardwood is the best I can come up... Continue reading
