Description

A very IMPORTANT SCOTTISH - CANADIAN HISTORICAL group of items which I am selling as 1 lot... I will not be splitting them up .

Firstly I would suggest you all do a quick google search for ARCHIBALD McNAB and see the amount of web sites related to this family..... this group of items really should be in a museum or good private collection...it is Historically important to Scotland as well as Canada.

So the group of items consists of the following.

1.... An oval red leather Portrait Miniature case ..with 1 of the 2 small brass hooks on the side complete.. the case is slightly twisted with age... as well as being scuffed on the corners and edges... remember all these items are Georgian .... opening this case you see a really fabulous young looking Scot with his Tartan high collar jacket and white collar shirt on.... on the opposite side it has a bit of paper saying ARCHIBALD MACNAB OF MACNAB ....

The oval portrait miniature is painted on the usual material of the period in a ROSE GOLD frame ...tested as 9ct gold with a large suspension loop. the edge of the frame is bevelled and VERY GOOD QUALITY made...in the back it has plaited HAIR....looking at the portrait of Archibald ... the painter has done a wonderful job with very good attention to detail on his face... you will not really see this in my photographs until your holding it in your hand . ...the TARTAN jacket is of course their own clan MACNAB .

The portrait miniature is 6.5cm wide x 9cm long includes the suspension loop and weighs approx 63.4grams... .the actual leather case is 7.5cm x 9.5cm x 1.5cm deep.

2...... Slightly smaller oval red leather portrait miniature case with 1 brass hook catch .. this has a young Man portrait in it.. he is wearing a black jacket with a high collar and a very nice white shirt with a bow ... he has side burns ..again the artist has done a wonderful job with attention to detail... the oval frame is only gold plated on this one with a slightly differant suspension loop which is hinged.. the rear of the portrait is EMPTY ...just a plain pink silky material . this portrait frame is 5.5cm x 8cm including the suspension loop and weighs approx ... 38.7grams ..the case is 6cm x 7.5cm x 1.5cm deep...it is a little scuffed from time and age.

3..........A round ended Georgian TOOTHPICK BOX .. this has a gold oval frame on top with plaited hair in it ..this is grey with a slight bit of red...NOT sure why .. the glass top is cracked. ...the frame of the lid is also Gold as well is the push button clasp( not working )...and the hinge. opening it up it is lined with red velvet material ..it has NO mirror under the lid. ..in overall superb condition for its age.. the cracked glass is minor and not detrimental to the item... it is 9cm long x 27mm wide x 1cm deep..it weighs approx... 28.6grams...the material has no cracks.. its lovely.

4..... A very Rare silver and mother of pearl carved SNUFF BOX ... a very high quality item which has been especially made for the MACNAB family.. as you can see all sides are made from carved mother of pearl.. the frame is silver...although it is not marked thus ..tested as silver....the top shows an interesting ORIENTAL scene ...the style suggests probably Chinese ....3 figures ..the central figure is female Suckling a young child on her left breast... and the child is holding the right breast... the other 2 figures are watching . the figure on the left has a short SWORD in their hand ..the figure on the right looks to be holding the female s neck.. and watching .. there are Trees in the background as well as other foliage around... and a small sat DEER or animal on the lower left corner ..BASKET with contents and a FAN on the lower right corner. ...with the Sun blazing and Birds flying in the sky ...a busy scene .....

The front panel this is CRACKED right in the centre...Shows tall buildings a Sailing ship in harbour and a Dog sat on a rock in the centre.

Going right the end panel has 2  ... 6 legged Insects .

Back panel ...2 tall buildings ..maybe lighthouses and a Sailing ship with the Sun and Trees in the back ground.

The other end panel shows a central Tree with a House and 2 Animals .

The corners are cut off and again this is a typical box shape of the Georgian era ...the top and bottom frames are silver ...as allready stated test as silver but NOT marked silver.

The base ..is plain with engraved centre wording ... Dr D. McNab R.N. ..... ( R.N. is Royal Navy and I would think it would be a fairly easy to research who this box belonged to being a Doctor as well.).. I think this is DONALD McNAB ..and is probably the second portrait miniature of him. ...Im sure the researchers amongst you will be able to tell who is who. ..the box is 7cm x 58mm x 23mm deep..the hinge works fine and it keeps shut as good as the day it was made.

A very important historical group of items worthy of more research.

Archibald Macnab of Macnab (1779-1860) was the last laird of the direct line of the clan Macnab. By the time he became chief in 1814 the Clan was in severe debt.
In May 1825, 85 Macnab men, women and children arrived in Montreal, Canada to settle on an 81,000 acre estate in a valley of the Ottawa River that Archibald, the 17th Macnab chief, named Macnab. The early years in the settlement were full of discomforts and disappointments as Archibald had promised more than he could provide and everything went from bad to worse. Archibald’s wife had left him when he fled from Scotland to Canada but made him a small allowance.  In 1853 Archibald fled from Canada, became a bigamist in London, moved to France and passed over there in 1860.
