Art deco finely cut crystal cheese or butter dome 1924 Kastrup |
This lovely piece is in very good condition.
The piece is a cheese or butter dome and used to protect food and keep it fresh.
The piece is almost identical to one seen below that was made by Kastrup glassworks in 1924. The piece originated from Denmark. The top knob and shape is basically the same so I feel confident enough to say it was made by the same glassworks.
Kastrup cheese or butter dome 1924
There are no chips or cracks to the piece. There are many scratches to the underside of the cut base plate from use. These are shown. The bottom underside has a polished pontil. The base plate has a cut, bevelled and polished edge to the scalloped rim.
The dome or bell also has a cut, bevelled and polished rim. There are two spots to the bottom rim of the bell or dome where a small chip may have been ground and polished. I tend to think this may have been done when the piece was made rather than later as both these spots continue on from the bevel of the edge. There are some reasonable size impurity inclusions in the glass which are consistent with ash from the kilns and I am only guessing but I can imagine these could have caused a problem to the rim when it was polished. The knob is faceted and the top is cut and polished.
There are a number of inclusions as mentioned; some are around 2mm across. Because of these the piece may be older than indicated above.
The piece is 190mm tall. The dome or bell is 143mmm across and the base plate is 215mm across.
For North American users a handy guide is 25mm or 2.5cm is a little less than 1 inch, so 100mm or 10cm is just less than 4 inches.
