Art Deco solid silver marcasite swallow brooch |
This lovely piece is in very good condition.
The brooch is in the form of a swallow with tiny red crystal eyes. The body and wings are studded with sparkling marcasites. The back is simply marked silver. There is a safety chain and pin. From the style and make of the brooch I would date it to sometime during the 1940's.
There is no damage to the piece. All the stones are present and there are no cracked or damaged stones. There is a jewellers’ mark to the back indicating something was done to the brooch. This puzzled me as there are no repairs evident until I noticed one marcasite stone was a duller colour and would have been a replacement. This stone is circled.
The clasp is a roll over locking type and works well. The pin is straight and secure in its hinge. The safety chain and pin are secure. The safety chain pin is a little bent but works well.
The brooch is 33mm x 27mm. The brooch weighs 8.8gms.
For North American users a handy guide is 25mm or 2.5cm is a little less than 1 inch, so 100mm or 10cm is just less than 4 inches.
