carved wooden box
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
falls into the categories of folk art and tramp art maybe.
measures about a little under 4 1/8 inches tall. 10.5 inches long. and about a whisker or two under 5.5 inches front to back.
carved top panel. carved front panel.
sort of one continuous scene of trees rising on either side. sort of match up with the trunks on top.
one set of birds... probably kingfishers on each panel.
and they are giving each the stare down. like hekyll and jekyll but a bit more serious.
uh, and much more art nouveau and detailed, and well, nicer.
really intricate carving to the birds, the foliage. the background. there are a few places where you can see some pencil marks as though the craftsperson might not have been finished with it.
as for age? well, i see art nouveau, arts & crafts elements. so maybe circa 1900 give or take.
the person i got this from seemed to think it was walnut and from Germany.
it is Not walnut. rather stained pine probably or perhaps redwood... probably pine. definitely a soft wood.
have no idea on origin.
only the top and front sides are carved.
the inside has some pencil and pen marks predominately to the left. on the other side of the front panel (inside the box) are a number of small light dark spots... like foxing.
there are scuff marks, scratches, signs of wear, handling, and a few light chips. there are separations between some of the joints... light. where the nails or brads are positioned. not bad. but worth mentioning just so you know.
it has been cleaned but a few bits of debris might still cling. I only mention it because of the nooks and crannies and that box was absolutely filthy when i found it.
it has been treated with a light beeswax, lemon oil mix a few months ago. it could probably stand another coat. but if i did it right now, i feel it would be too shiny for the photos.
there is some oxidation to the hinges.
please don't hesitate should you have any questions or concerns.
