Southern Cross Rally 1970

Black and White photographic print 8"x10" (20x25cm) taken during the 1970 Westfield Plaza Southern Cross Rally.

The Southern Cross Rally was an Internationally sanctioned event which was mainly held on challenging roads in the forests and hills surrounding the New South Wales northern coastal town of Port Macquarie.  While not part of the Australian Rally Championship, it did however attract top fields of international competitors from 1966 to 1980.

This photo shows the ex BMC works rally car which had competed in the 1968 London to Sydney marathon driven by Tony Fall.  It also ran and won the 1969 Southern Cross driven by Andrew Cowan, and it was entered in the 1970 event and driven by John Taylor and navigated by Dr Grahame West.  The event was won by the Holden Dealer Team XU-1 Torana of Barry Ferguson and Dave Johnson.
