Item specifics - Art
Original/Reproduction: OriginalEra: 1950s
Originating Region: AustraliaCondition: Used
This auction is for a stunning group of 25 extremely rare early watercolour paintings of costume designs, set designs, landscapes and others all by renowned international artist/costume designer Desmond Ward Digby (1933-). Desmond Digby, is a New Zealand-born artist and designer who settled in Sydney, Australia in 1959. He met and became close friends with Patrick White (Nobel Prize for Literature) in 1961, and subsequently designed the sets including costumes for a number of White's plays which have appeared at international venues such as the Sydney Opera House, along with dust jackets for three of White's books.

These paintings were done between 1949 & 1953 while Digby was still a pupil at Mt. Albert Grammar School, Auckland. Obviously, this young lad knew what direction he was heading right from his earliest days. Most of the images are large measuring roughly 560mm x 370mm, although a half dozen are slightly smaller at around 380mm x 280mm. These rare items are unframed but in good to very good condition. A number bear the Mt Albert Grammar School 1940/50's stamps, are signed by Digby & dated and all are from the artist's own school art portfolio and include titles to the costumes and the teacher's marks. Two of Digby's oil paintings sold at Lawson-Menzies, Sydney in 2007 for A$1920* each.
