Kate Jennings learns to hoot and holler at the Democratic National Convention where Bill Clinton is confirmed as his party's presidential candidate.  She examines Madonna's fantasies and Eleanor Roosevelt's love-life.  Her subjects include votive paintings, folly gardens, nude beaches, money and marriage.  And to each of these widely varied topics she brings the clear-headed perspective and elegant prose familiar to readers of her previous books.  Her viewpoint is that of a pioneer of feminism who has not allowed herself to be blinded by ideology.  The central piece of this vividly argued collection is 'High Horses', a droll meditation on the self-righteousness that permeates today's political and cultural thinking.

 

Kate Jennings is an Australian living in New York.

A great conversation starter and a good one for book clubs.
