This first ever CD release of the long-lost classic album from Melbourne country punks The Band Who Shot Liberty Valance - offshoot of seminal punk acts I Spit On Your Gravy and the Corpse Grinders - is an absolute beer-drenched belter. First released in 1987 - and long since out of print - Outlaw Death Lager Drinkers From Hell is a joyous run through the country genre from an urban punk perspective, effortlessly capturing their rollicking, renowned live show on tape. Despite the fact that most of their original numbers are about either their drinking buddies or cartoon characters who inhabited the comic strips penned by frontman Freddy Negro for the weekly street press - Football Mouth, Grizzlette and their nemesis El Cheeso were all beloved characters back in the day - they are so infectiously fun, deviant and quintessentially Aussie that a lack of familiarity with this crew of miscreants matters little. They’re also completely irreverent with the classics they cover (or adapt) - ’(Ghost) Riders In The Sky’ becomes ’Gravybillys In The Sky’, ’Running Bear’ becomes ’Running Beer’ and ’I Fought The Law’ becomes the awesomely hilarious ’I Drank The Slab’ - but their love of the genre is evident in both the songs they tackle and the rough-yet-loving way that they approach them. This record is crude, coarse and thoroughly reprehensible - and certainly not for the faint of heart or easily offended - but for those who like a dash of humour with their music, or are interested in the minutiae of Aussie rock history, this re-release is an absolute godsend.
