This generously illustrated field guide to the birds of Japan fills the longstanding need for an authoritative work in English addressed to the bird-lovers of other countries.

The book begins with a summary of the geographical and climatic conditions of Japan. A chapter on bird distribution, and another on migration, help to illustrate the relations of birds to the Japanese environment. Then, as a practical guide to the visitor, there is a chapter on where to go in Japan to see birds, introducing over 30 favourable destinations for bird-watching trips. These are three unique features that have never before been included ina book on Japanese birds.

Finally, 280 of the principal species of Japanese birds are illustrated in colour. The illustrations were done by the late Shigezo Kobayashi, a field expert. Birds rare in Japan and unlikely to be encountered by visitors have been omitted from the illustrations, but at the end of the book a complete list of the birds of Japan is given, with English, Japanese, and scientific names and the status of each species in Japan. A very detailed index makes the book highly useful as a reference work.
