Black Sapote or Chocolate Pudding Fruit

(Diospyros digyna)

On offer 5 fresh seeds

Black Sapote or Chocolate Pudding Fruit (in Spanish) zapote prieto, also known as Black Persimmon (Diospyros digyna) is a species of Persimmon native to eastern Mexico and Central America south to Colombia. The Black Sapote is unrelated to the Mammey Sapote , and the White Sapote.

These attractive trees can grow to over 25 m in height and are evergreen. If pruned correctly they will remain a shrub.

The Black Sapote can be grown in the tropical to subtropical regions. However the tree is a little frost sensitive. The leaves are elliptic-oblong ,very attractive, tapered at both ends, glossy, and 10-30 cm long.

Black Sapote fruit is green on the outside skin and are around the size of a tomato about 10 - 13 cm in diameter, with an inedible skin which turns from green to olive to a deep yellow-green when ripe and an edible pulp that is white when unripe and ripens to a dark chocolate colour and a very mushy texture.

The green fruit is picked from the tree when hard and green and are then allowed to soften and go olive green- brown and very soft within 3-10 days. At the ripe stage - you should be able to press the skin with your fingers and leave an Permanente indent.

The flavour, colour and texture is often likened to Chocolate Pudding when ripe.

The Black Sapote is also called the “Chocolate pudding fruit” for this reason.

The fruit by itself has somewhat of a bland chocolate flavour but without the caffeine or calories!

In Mexico the pulp is mashed with orange juice or brandy and served with cream and honey, it is also delicious mixed with wine, cinnamon and sugar.
Delicious when eaten as a desert with ice cream and a touch of Rum or vanilla.

Rightly known as Chocolate Pudding Fruit this amazing fruit is low in fat and an excellent source of Vitamin C containing up to 4 times as much as an orange. The fruit is delicious eaten fresh or used as a chocolate substitute in all recipes and milkshakes or simply mix the pulp with yogurt and lemon juice for a refreshing guilt free treat.

The black sapote is a Chocoholics dream come true!

Not surprisingly this is one of the most popular tropical fruits and if you like Chocolate you'll love the Black Sapote.

The seeds are sent moist to you to ensure viability and may even be shotting by the time you receive them, so they will need to be planted straight away.
