A brief history:
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were American criminals, active in the midwestern and south-western United States during the Great Depression. It is estimated that they were responsible for at least thirteen murders, twelve bank robberies and numerous hold-ups of gas stations and stores between 1931 and 1935.
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker was born in Rowena, Texas, on October 1, 1910. Her father died when she was four and her mother moved with the three children to Dallas, where they lived in poverty.
Bonnie did well academically in school. She was on the honour roll in high school and excelled in creative writing. She was an attractive girl, only 4 ft. 11 in. tall and weighing just 90 pounds.
In 1926, at age 15, Bonnie married Roy Thornton, but the union was short-lived. The couple separated in 1929, but never divorced.
Unknown to her, her misfortune was compounded when she met Clyde Barrow at a friend's house in 1930. It was love at first sight for both.
Clyde Chestnut Barrow was born in Ellis County, Texas on March 24, 1909, the fifth of seven children in a poor farming family. His life of crime was already underway in 1926, when he was arrested for auto theft. Over the next four years, he conducted a series of robberies in the Dallas area.
After he met Bonnie in 1930, he was arrested and taken to prison. Bonnie, head over heels in love, smuggled a gun to Clyde and he was able to participate in a jailbreak. He immediately started another crime spree and was soon returned to prison.
Clyde's incarceration left lasting scars. Some biographers feel that, while Bonnie' s crimes stemmed from love and loyalty to Clyde, his primary motivation was to gain revenge against the Texas justice system for abuses he suffered in prison.
In February, 1932, Clyde was released and he immediately returned to a life of crime, but this time Bonnie was at his side. They stole a car, and a police chase commenced. Clyde escaped but Bonnie was captured and spent several months in jail. She was released in June, 1932.
The two became leaders of a small group of criminals known as the Barrow gang. Among the gang members were Clyde's brother, Buck Barrow, his wife Blanche, W. D. Jones, and Henry Methvin.
Between 1932 and 1934 the Barrow gang embarked on an ambitious course of criminal activity which included kidnappings, robberies, murders, throughout the south-central and south-western states. Clyde was thought to be the killer in approximately ten shootings. Bonnie was never seen to shoot anyone herself, but she was certainly a willing accomplice.
There were several incidents in which robbery victims or lawmen were kidnapped, driven far from home and then released. Sometimes they were given money to return home. These deeds helped Bonnie and Clyde acquire a mythical aura and they gained a cult following among out-of-work depression victims who blamed the government for their problems.
In 1933, Buck Barrow was killed and his wife wounded during a police raid near Platte City, Missouri.
In January, 1934, Clyde obtained his long-awaited revenge against the Texas Department of Corrections. He masterminded the successful jailbreak of Henry Methvin, Raymond Hamilton and several others. The department was extremely embarrassed by the incident and received nation-wide negative publicity.
In the course of the escape, a prison officer was killed, and the full power of the Texas and federal governments was brought to bear in an effort to capture Bonnie and Clyde.
On April 1, 1934, the pair killed two young highway patrolmen in Grapevine, Texas, and another law officer five days later in Oklahoma.
On May 23, 1934, the young criminals were killed in ambush by a posse of Texas and Louisiana policemen near their hideout in Bienville, Louisiana. When they died, Bonnie was 24, Clyde was 25.
Over the years, songs and films romanticized the pair and their criminal exploits, but realistically, they were no better than out-of-control young hoodlums with no social conscience. They committed acts of murder and mayhem through the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, New Mexico and Louisiana.
Although they were lucky enough to evade capture for two years, they were finally brought down by a barrage of police bullets on a back road in Louisiana.
On that day, Americans, already suffering from the hardships imposed by the Depression, were at least relieved of the scourge of chaos and catastrophe created by Bonnie and Clyde.
