Protea compacta, known as the Bot River Sugarbush or Protea, is a lovely protea that grows as an erect, spreading shrub, 3.5 metres tall and up to 3 metres across.
The oval leaves are heart-shaped at the base (50-130 mm long, 20-55 mm wide).
Flowerheads are cupshaped (90-120 mm long, 60 mm wide) and have pink involucral bracts that are fringed with hairs. Seeds are retained in seedheads until fire occurs when they are released.
Proteas prefer a mild climate with low humidity. They can tolerate slight frosts, but the young foliage and flowers may be slightly damaged.
Proteas prefer deep, well drained sand with a pH of 5.0 to 6.0 for optimum growth and production. Avoid alkaline soils for most species. They prefer a low phosphorus site.
