About the Author
Ernle Bradford was born in Norfolk, England, in 1922 and was
educated at Uppingham School. He joined the Royal Navy as a volunteer
at eighteen and served with distinction for the duration of the Second
World War. he was a broadcaster for the BBC and a magazine editor. He
was a writer from the age of sixteen and published numerous books,
including The Great Siege: Malta 1565 (1961), Ulysses Found (1963), Cleopatra (1971), Mediterranean: Portrait of a Sea (1971), Christopher Columbus (1973), The Sword and the Scimitar: The Saga of the Crusades (1974), Hannibal (1982), Julius Caesar: The Pursuit of Power (1984) and Siege: Malta 1940-1943.
His special knowledge of the Mediterranean world and his exceptional
powers of description and historical reconstruction bring to life this
illustrated biography of one of the world's legendary women. He lived
in Malta with his family until his death in 1986.
