Feijoa sellowiana, variously known as pineapple guava originates from southern Brazil and Argentina. It is a delightful and highly ornamental evergreen shrub to small tree that normally reaches 3 metres in height and width in cultivation. The evergreen, thick, leathery leaves range from 2.5 to 5 cm long and up to 3 cm wide, smooth soft green on top and silvery underneath, flashing nicely in a gentle breeze. It produces very attractive, lightly scented blooms as illustrated in the summer followed by perfumed, edible fruit with thick, white, granular, watery flesh in late summer. It makes an excellent jelly or jam or just as a tasty fresh fruit snack on a warm day.
Feijoa prefers a light loamy well-drained soil (but not extreme alkalinity) in full sun or part shade. It is a tough hardy plant that is drought tolerant and can take sub-tropical climates and the cold and frost to about -12*C. Germination is straightforward without any requirement of pretreatment.
