It began life as Ferdinand Porsche’s concept of a small car for the man in the street - a concept which suffered from innumerable false starts. The wartime influ- ences on its development could so easily have branded it with a completely negative image, an image from which sales would never have recovered. But the car survived and prospered. Building it provided work and shelter for thousands of displaced people after the war, and the town of Wolfsburg owes its existence entirely to the Volkswagen. Beetle saPes eventually outstripped that of the Model T Ford, and it is still being produced today in Mexico and Brazil. Amazingly, although just about every small part of it has been changed in some way over the years, the very youngest of Beetles still looks just like the oldest - an instantly recognisable automotive legend throughout the world.
