Iris and Theo Stern seem to have it all: a sound marriage, four wonderful children, a beautiful house filled with lovely things. Theo is one of the country's top plastic surgeons. His young cousin Tim, a university professor, is becoming known to authorities and students alike as a radical Vietnam protestor, inciting others to violence with his charm and dynamism. When Steve Stren falls under the influence of this man, he unwittingly precipitates a chain of events that spirals the Sterns fortune and happiness downward with no foreseeable end. Until Paul, seeing his beloved unacknowledged family sliding into despair, decides he must help them. By doing so he is at last able to find his own peace of mind...
