Presented here for consideration is a Kingsford Smith Bendigo Toby Jug. This Toby is glazed in the Rockingham colour-way that imparts a dark rich earthy hue. It also comes with the original numbered certificate and promotional flyer that it was issued with.

Over the years I have sold many examples of this and the other tobies in the range and this one are different to any other that I have seen. This does not show in the photos, but when it is in bright light it sparkles as if it had Christmas card glitter in the glaze.

It also comes with a photo-copy of the “Statement Of Close Of Edition” by William J.B. Derham the then Managing Director of Bendigo Pottery (see below). Impressed into the underside of this Jug is a makers’ mark and the number 853/3000.

In December 1973 the Melbourne artist, and political Cartoonist, John Firth designed this series of Toby jugs that where to be glazed in a Borax glaze or a Rockingham glaze. The series originally consisted of 6 characters, Sir Robert Menzies, Sir Donald Bradman, Henry Lawson, Albert Namatjira, Kingsford Smith and Ned Kelly. C. J. Dennis was added to the series at a later date. These Toby’s where to be made in a limited edition of only 3000, but due to very poor sales this amount where never made. I have a Statement Of Close Of Edition dated 3/10/77 and signed by William J.B. Derham the then Managing Director of Bendigo Pottery. In this statement Derham states that on the 3/10/77 he smashed the moulds so terminating the production run of the Kingsford Smith Jug at 802 pieces. I know that some people will have Toby’s numbered above this number; the reason for this is that many of the Toby’s where damaged during firing, this is especially so with those in the Borax colour-way. The borax glaze had to be fired at much higher temperature so there where many breakages. The manufacture of the Toby’s in the Borax colour-way was eventually discontinued for this reason. I’m sure that Bendigo intended to full in the missing numbers at a later date, but as the run was not fully subscribed this was never done. I must finish by saying that this statement of close is a statutory declaration; Mr Derham would not have lied.

Old Kingsford Smith stands a proud 15 cm (6”) tall.

Condition

Kingsford Smith is AS NEW condition. There are NO chips, cracks or repairs and NO crazing. Please note that the Statement of Close of Edition is a photocopy only.

This is a very sought after series of Toby jugs, of Kingsford Smith there where only ever 802 of these produced – max. These can only grow in value from here. It is over 30 years old and it is still in AS NEW condition.
