 Title: "Superb Blue Fairy Wren" ARTIST'S STATEMENT Australian backyards are hosts to many amazing native and introduced bird species. I am lucky enough to have a few natives that frequent my yard and neighbourhood. This image is from a series of paintings titled "Backyard Feathers" which explores species observed at or near my home in the Hunter Valley on the eastern coast of Australia. This is a portrait of a tiny male and female Superb Blue Fairy Wren (Malurus cyaneus). The male in breeding plumage is recognised with his beautiful blue colour. Non-breeding males, females and juveniles are predominantly grey-brown, but females can be identified with a brown rather than black beak. I have 3 or 4 of these wrens that frequent my yard. Often seen flitting around the tadpole pond and gum tree in our yard. Their lively hops and bounces are fun to watch, with the pretty flashes of blue making them easy to spot.

She has won numerous international art contests. Her former employment includes Artist-In-Residence and Private Art Tutor for a community centre and an Art Teacher for a children's resource unit.
