Banksia integrifolia, the Coastal Banksia is found growing naturally along the East coast of Australia from Victoria to Central Queensland and is one of the easiest and most visually rewarding natives that can be grown as bonsai. Coastal Banksia is an evergreen species that features distinctive green foliage with pale grey to white undersides that reduce quite well with constant pinching of the new growth, certainly a lot more readily than the Old Man Banksia - Banksia serrata.
Banksia integrifolia responds well to pruning, branches can be cut right back to the trunk in late spring to early summer, allowing branches to be rebuilt if desired. Yellow flowers are produced throughout the growing period on 2-3 year old branches, the short lived flower spikes are most abundant during autumn. Decent examples of Coastal banksia are difficult to find in bonsai nurseries.
