Brown Silky Oak, White Oak or Scrub Beefwood
Grevillea baileyana
syn G. pinnitifida
This plant is not on the Australian Weed List.
A native of the north east Queensland and Papua New Guinea where it prefers well composted, moist soils in a protected position. While it is a rainforest species and it dislikes frost and drought when young, it can live in a sub-tropical climate once established.
An evergreen tree to 20 metres (60 ft) with a spread of 4 metres, it is a much smaller tree in cultivation. The stem is erect with spreading with angular branches and scaly, hard, grey bark. The leaves are smooth, leathery, deeply lobed, up to 30cm when juvenile changing to silvery-grey, oval, entire with rusty-furry undersides when mature. The flowers are creamy white, profuse, occurring in narrow, terminal, branched heads 15cm long from late spring through summer.
