With custom biker builders currently enjoying the fame, fortune, and celebrity status normally associated with rock stars, it’s not surprising that the print and video markets are flooded with custom cycle products. And with Billy Lane being at the forefront of the customization industry it’s even less surprising that a new book should feature him exclusively. So how does Billy Lane’s How To Build Old School Choppers, Bobbers and Customs stack up as a read? Though it’s a bit slammed together, it gives its readers lots of insights into how Billy works, as well as some of his tips and tricks of the trade.

The book’s opening two sections provide a listing of necessary tools for a build, as well as a solid explanation as to planning, then beginning a given project. The rest of the book is filled with a wealth of photos showing Lane plying his trade. From making paper templates to spot-welding sheet metal to aligning the driveline components, Billy invites you into his workplace to observe various steps of custom bike construction. The numerous photos are concisely captioned, and clearly depict Lane in the trenches as he brainstorms, cuts, welds, bends, grinds, and basically makes his two-wheeled vision a reality.

However, there are a few things the reader must keep in mind as he peruses these pages. First off, the book does not show Billy taking one machine from start to finish. Rather, different chapters feature different machines getting work done to them. Second, don’t expect to get a step-by-step process of how to build a bike from scratch. That’s not what this book is about, which is exactly why it’s such a great read.
