BACKBLOCK

BALLADS

AND

LATER VERSES

Illustrated by Hal Gye

First published in 1918, Backblock Ballads and Later Verses presents some of the material from Dennis's first book (1913) and additional verses, together with Hal Gye's inimitable illustrations.

"The collection reveals Dennis's wide range of voices and concerns. The Backblock Ballads, as distinct from the Later Verses, show his ability to use the customary bush themes with the expected atmosphere, but with a special sharpness and an unusual adroitness in making fun of things. The Later Verses display similar qualities of insight and humour. "Paw" is an amusing satire on rich and selfish snobbery; "The Austral-aise" was his award-winning submission for a national song, which contains in every line a blank space representing the word "bloody" (considered unprintable in those times); "'Urry!" is a warm appraisal of a woman's lot; and in "A Guide for Poits" Dennis in self-mockery reveals a small part of the recipe for his success. Others, such as "Work or Reflection" and "K'shoo" are just sheer good fun.

"The wonderfully varied collection, unavailable for so many years, will be welcomed by all who have enjoyed the work of the sentimental bloke."

JIM

OF THE HILLS

Illustrated by Hal Gye

In Jim of the Hills C.J. Dennis takes us to the bush-clad hills of Victoria and introduces "Lonely Jim, the bloke that don't say much". But, having arrived at thirty, Jim's been doing some thinking:

"Me an' my old dog's been talkin' quite a lot - of love and things:
Weighin' matters; an' we reckon this here love is full of stings . . .
Love an' all that talk, we reckon, is a silly sort of fake -
What's a plain man wantin' further is his wife can wash an' bake?"

"Jim, of course, is heading for a fall for which he'll earn the scorn of his old dog before both of them are captured by the "vision with the sunlight in her hair."

"First published in 1919, and not since republished, Jim of the Hills reveals in some measure Dennis's reaction to the world around his home at Toolangi in the hills near Melbourne. The birds, the trees, the work of the timbermen and the menace of forest fires - all were recorded in this warm and wryly romantic story in verse."

Selected Verse

of

C.J. DENNIS

Chosen and Introduced

by

 ALEC H. CHISHOLM

This comprehensive collection of the poetry of C.J. Dennis includes poems from The Sentimenal Bloke, Jim of the Hills, Digger Smith, The Glugs of Gosh, Ginger Mick, Blackblock Ballads, The Book for Kids and Doreen.

"The selection has been made, and is introduced, by Dennis' biographer, Alec H. Chisholm. Mr Chisholm has aimed at achieving a truly representative selection, one which displays Dennis' versatility as well as his skill.

"Dennis is, of course, best known as the author of The Sentimental Bloke, the master of 'slanguage'. He also wrote, however, as well as other vernacular verse tales, bush ballads, the lilting fantasy The Glugs of Gosh, and many merry and melodious verses for children. Examples of all these are included here.

"Selected Verse of C.J. Dennis is a thoroughly entertaining volume, the poet's verses occasionally complemented by an original Hal Gye illustration. Those readers already familiar with Dennis' verse will regain the joy of former readings; new readers will be captivated by its robust humour, human tenderness and extraordinary skill in rhyming."
