CARNIVOROUS PITCHER PLANT Sarracenia purpurea 20 seeds

They are trumpet shaped plants and are passive insect traps, that means they have no rapidly moving parts and the lids do not shut! They capture insects by attracting them with nectar. The slippery sides of the pitcher and downward pointing hairs stop the insects escaping from their pitchers once the prey topple in. Some species exude an amazing variety of chemicals, including digestive enzymes, wetting agents, and insect narcotics! Others rely on bacterial action to ingest the prey.

The Purple Pitcher Plant has pitchers are slender at the basal rosette, rapidly becoming swollen higher up. They are green with purple tints and the plant itself only grows to about 15cm in height.

Beautiful maroon or reddish-purple flowers appear in spring and are about 5-8cm wide and stand about 25-30cm above the plant. The flowers resemble an upside down umbrella.

They make for an unusual garden plant or do equally as well in pots or containers. They prefer full sun and are very frost hardy. Also prefer a moist site and can handle very boggy conditions.
