There is software embedded in the cable that loads onto your PC and Mac (it doesn't install anything) and facilitates the backup process.

It's a cool device that comes in handy for those who may not be sure how to otherwise automate a backup. Plug an external drive into one end, then plug the other end into your computer, and you're done! Works with PCs (including Windows 7) and Macs (OS X 10.5 or later).
