COLORFUL COLORADO - ITS DRAMATIC HISTORY - 1959 -1ST ED

Colorado, the thirty-eighth state to enter the union, has been chronicled many times by historians.  But its story has never been told so compactly and so colorfully as in this book.

Aided by thirty-one photos in colour and eighty illustrations with maps in black and white, Caroline Bancroft, one of Colorado's best-known historians, has succinctly surveyed the sweep of the state's history from Folsom Man's tenancy to the celebration of the Rush-to-the-Rockies Centennial.

Colorado has had a varied history involving many cultures - Indian, Spanish, French. Mexican and American.  In consequence, it has often been a battlefield, and it was not until 1848, at the close of the Mexican War, that its territory came completely under the ownership of the United States.

Gold and the lure of sudden wealth brought the land into sudden prominence in 1859.  But the state's actual territory was still claimed in varying degrees by Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and Utah.  It was not until 1861 that the name of Colorado and its boundaries (as we know then today) came into being.

This 127 page hardcover has some wear, splits and marks to dustjacket.  Internally there is a gift inscription and superficial insect damage inside first page, but it is otherwise in a good, tight, clean condition.  An intersting read and some wonderful early photographs.
