The first edition of The MCC Cricket Coaching Book was published in 1952. Then, and through its many revisions, the aim was to view the game's techniques, to assist coaches and to appeal to cricketers, young or old, who wanted to check their game against the accepted orthodoxies.
MCC Mastcrclass moves away from that approach to one which is presaged in the title - essays of instruction, advice and experience composed by masters of the game. To complement their written word, teaching videos have been made. Cricket skills can be presented successfully in book form as we will show but the visual possibilities of learning have moved on. Television is a superb propagator of international cricket and it is appropriate that some of those cricketers who have thrilled many nations in Test matches should become the most attractive teachers.

Indeed these 'Masters' have been chosen because they have a famed understanding of their art and craft and are the finest teachers in the game. Their style is personal and direct, the language of master to pupil or sometimes of the fatherly figure who can come up with a technical suggestion which will suit you. Imagine a university supervision by an expert who talks, cajoles, demonstrates and lays out his whole thesis before you for debate.
As the author, I found it an enriching experience to bring their cricket intelligence to you in book form. Although I had my own wide experience on which to draw as a player, writer and broadcaster, I was constantly surprised by rare bits of insight. I was impressed by the depth of thinking which these most successful cricketers put into their game.

'Keep it simple, mate,' Dennis Lillee advised me, and I have. This is a book which simply explains how to play cricket. It omits much that was in the book it has replaced. There are no chapters on grounds and pitches, Group Coaching or non-turf pitches. Fitness for Cricket is limited to personal advice from the masters within their chapters, and all advice on fitness is directly related to the skills of the game. Advice on equipment comes as and when the teaching turns that way.
In short, MCC Masterclass is an attempt to present tuition in simple, expert words. All eleven masters confess to have been blinkered and dedicated to practice when they were young. This new MCC coaching book is there-fore a highly focused tutorial for all cricketers.

As in my previous work for MCC, the bicentennial book, Double Century: The Story of MCC and Cricket, my editor has been John Bright-Holmes, a man of words and the way to use them, who also loves the game of cricket. He has embraced the fresh version of Masterclass. Our partnership has always been a happy one and we have both appreciated the energetic back-up and attention to detail of my secretary Sian Thomas.

I hope that MCC Masterclass will be both vivid and personal, attached only to the playing of cricket. It ignores the wide under-growth of theory which tends to grow around the great game and enmesh it in confusion. MCC's contribution is simple – each essay comes essentially, as the old record company used to advertise, from His Master's Voice. Presentation new: truths old.
