Sshhh... Just between you and me, I want to let you in on a little secret...
I LOVE Cubic Zirconias!
I LOVE Cubic Zirconias!
I LOVE Cubic Zirconias!
Cubic Zirconias have the ability to
refract light from within the stone to create incredible brilliance like a Diamond, but ....
for a fraction of the price!
Cubic Zirconia can be made in most cases entirely colourless: equivalent to a perfect "D" on diamond colour grading scale.
They are also made virtually flawless internally.
Also, rate highly on Mohs hardness scale,
an 8 vs a rating of 10 for diamonds.
Yes, these are Cubic Zirconias,
and they look Sensational!
Stunning Cubic Zirconia

Diamond substitute, Cubic Zirconia
Ref: (1) Cubic Zirconia (or CZ), is the cubic crystalline form of zirconiumdioxide (ZrO2). The synthesized material is hard, optically flawless and usually colourless, but may be made in a variety of different colours. It should not be confused with Zircon which is a zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4). Because of its low cost, durability, and close visual likeness to Diamond, synthetic Cubic Zirconia has remained the most gemologically and economically important competitor for Diamonds since 1976.
Cubic Zirconia versus Diamond
Ref: (2)
There are a few key features of Cubic Zirconia which distinguish it from Diamond, some observable only under the microscope or loupe.
Dispersion: With a dispersive power greater than Diamond (0.060 vs. 0.044) the more prismatic fire of Cubic Zirconia can be seen by even an untrained eye.
Hardness: Cubic Zirconia has a rating of approximately 8 on Mohs hardness scale vs. a rating of 10 for Diamonds.
Specific Gravity: Cubic Zirconia crystals are heavyweights in comparison to Diamonds; a Cubic Zirconia will weigh about 1.7 times more than a Diamond of equivalent size.
Flaws: Contemporary production of Cubic Zirconia is virtually flawless, whereas most Diamonds have some sort of defect, be it a feather, included crystal, carbon, or perhaps a remnant of an original crystal face (eg trigons).
Refractive index: Cubic Zirconia has a refractive index of 2.176, compared to a Diamond's 2.417.
Cut: Some Cubic Zirconias use different facet shapes than are typically used for Diamonds. This difference would be visible under close inspection with a loupe.
Colour: (or more precisely, the lack thereof): Only the rarest of Diamonds are truly colourless, most having a tinge of yellow or brown to some extent. By comparison, Cubic Zirconia can be made in most cases entirely colourless: equivalent to a perfect "D" on Diamond's colourgrading scale.
Thermal conductivity: Cubic Zirconias are thermal insulators while Diamonds are among the most efficient thermal conductors, exceeding Copper. This makes telling the difference between Diamond and Cubic Zirconia quite easy for those with the right instruments.

Characteristics
In appearance and practical use, Cubic Zirconia resembles Diamonds in many ways. It is an isometric compound and is extremely dense (even more dense than a Diamond). In terms of hardness, Cubic Zirconia is rated at around 8 on the Mohs hardness scale while Diamonds are harder, rated 10. Cubic Zirconia also affects the light that passes through it in ways similar to a Diamond, making it a good substitute in optical and aesthetic applications. Both materials have a high refractive index and high dispersions. Cubic Zirconia can also be produced with a number of colour tints.
Differences from Diamonds
Cubic Zirconia does differ from Diamonds in several important ways. While most Diamonds have some natural flaws, Cubic Zirconia is essentially flawless with a consistent composition throughout. It can also be produced to be colourless, which is a quality very desirable, but seldom found, in natural Diamonds. Most examples of Cubic Zirconia would receive a perfect 'D' rating on the scale of Diamond colourlessness. Since it is chemically different, Cubic Zirconia is generally cut with differently shaped facets than those of a Diamond. Finally, Cubic Zirconia reacts differently to heat, acting as a thermal insulator, whereas Diamonds are conductors of heat.
Hardness
Ref: (4)
Hardness is one measure of the strength of the structure of the mineral relative to the strength of its chemical bonds. It is not the same as brittleness, which is another measure of strength, that is purely related to the structure of the mineral. Minerals with small atoms, packed tightly together with strong covalent bonds throughout tend to be the hardest minerals.
Hardness can be tested through scratching. A scratch on a mineral is actually a groove produced by microfractures on the surface of the mineral. A mineral can only be scratched by a harder substance. A hard mineral can scratch a softer mineral, but a soft mineral can not scratch a harder mineral. Therefore, a relative scale can be established to account for the differences in hardness simply by seeing which mineral scratches another. That is exactly what French mineralogist Friedrich Mohs proposed almost one hundred and seventy years ago. The Mohs Hardness Scale starting with Talc at 1 and ending with Diamond at 10, is universally used around the world as a way of distinguishing minerals. Simply put; the higher the number, the harder the mineral.
Mohs based the scale on ten minerals that are all readily available. As the hardest known naturally occurring substance when the scale was designed, Diamonds are at the top of the scale. The hardness of a material is measured against the scale by finding the hardest material that the given material can scratch, and/or the softest material that can scratch the given material.

The jewellery in my Opal Shop has been exclusively manufactured by Mandy Healey for the past 16 Years. In that time, I have never had a problem with her work, or an item returned. Mandy's work has always been First Class.
The reason I use her above other and sometimes cheaper alternatives, is because of the extremely high attention to detail and quality finish of the product.
Customers do notice the difference between my stock that Mandy has made and other shops.
She comes recommended to the highest degree.

I asked Mandy to create an individual piece of jewellery for my girlfriends birthday and from the very basic idea I gave her of a butterfly motive in gold with an opal as the feature, she came up with the uniquely designed pendant that is close to my girlfriends heart. Literally, as she wears it everyday now. I couldn't be happier with the design, the opal, or the pendant!
Keep having fun.

I'm a qualified Master Jeweller and Goldsmith and have been designing and manufacturing in the industry for over 28 years. My inspiration to become a Jeweller came from both my parents who were Opal miner's and cutters. This is where my passion and drive for beautiful, quality and inspiring Jewellery began.
Moving Mandy's Designer Jewellery online has given me the opportunity to share Quality Fine Jewellery with everyone. Including one offs and limited editions.
I'm dedicated to Jewellery excellence and very particular when it comes to the design, flow, quality and finish of my work. I concentrate on quality not quantity allowing me to offer my customer 100% satisfaction guarantee on materials and workmanship. I make sure that the quality of materials and gemstones I use are the best. I was trained in Townsville by Master Jeweller, Allan Birch. Allan is my greatest mentor, and friend; and has taught me never to accept anything less than the highest degree of quality and finish; I honour this promise every day.
I have also represented Australia overseas with my Jewellery through the Australian Trade Commission. My work has been admired by the likes of Arab Princesses' & Sheiks, worn by Dignitaries and photographed in International Magazines as well as featuring on international Television.
