Decades ago I was fortunate enough to privately purchase a large collection of ephemera from the estate of George Mackaness, Australian Historian, Educationalist, Bibliophile, O.B.E., M.A., D.Litt., Freemason, Masonic Historian, +++++.

You will find an entry for Dr. Mackaness on Dictionary of Australian Biography' - ADB online edition by Australian National University -a list of 1000 notable Australians. Sorry, I had noted Percival Serle's Aust., Biography website in earlier listings !!

All pieces I shall be offering are the originals.

The collection consists of interesting letters, many from other notable literary persons, poets [Hugh McCrae & Dame Mary Gilmore to name 2], Australian officials & International persons, early photographs of rare, historical books, early Australian Short Stories, the authors' 1st proof copy of Blue Bloods of Botany Bay including cover artwork, personal ephemera, masonic items including Mr Mackaness's personal aprons & medallions, auction catalogues, . etc. etc.

Details

One of many notable Australian/International signatures/autographs I am currently listing from the above estate. I literally have hundreds of letters to list from politicians to magistrates, poets, librarians, booksellers, military persons, etc.,.

This letter has a hand written notation in the hand of George Mackaness, to the reverse side. He writes " Grandaughter of Captain Edward Edwards, Commander of H.M.S. Pandora sent out to seek the Bounty Mutineers - wrecked on Queensland Coast."

Regarding / Content : - Dear Dr Mackaness, Thank you for your letter, alas I have not been able to receive any of the papers I entrusted to the Museum [in pencil GM has written Chatham]. They say they must have been lost during the Blitz - & I can get no further with them. What can one do - it seems just nothing.

I should be very pleased to see the friends you mention if they wish to visit Worthing. No news of them as yet.

All I have now is the watch of Capt. Edwards & some uniform buttons. I am very sorry, & consider the Museum very careless.
