Cardboard Cycad

Zamia furfuracea

A native of the coastal Savannah of Eastern Mexico where it grows right down to the water. Also known as Cardboard Sago, Cardboard Plant, Cardboard Palm and Mexican Cycad, this plant gets its common name from the stiff cardboard feel of its leaflets. It has been declared vulnerable because of constant, illegal, bush harvesting in its natural habitat.

Its preference is for moist, well-drained soils in a sunny, open position or semi shade. It does not like constant deep shade or cold climates but may be grown as a house plant in temperate climates. It is reasonably salt and drought tolerant.

With a short trunk up to 20cm tall and wide, it grows slowly when young but quite quickly once the trunk matures typically reaching 1.3 metres tall with a width of 2 metres.

The leaves radiate from a central trunk; each being 50 to 150 cm long and comprising 6 to 12 pairs of stiff, furry green leaflets. Flowering consists of a single, oval rusty-brown cone in the centre of the female plant and smaller cone clusters on the male plant, typical of the Cycad family.

Offered is a packet of 12 seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this very popular cycad.
