Cat's Paw, Kangaroo Paw
Anigozanthos humilis
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
A native of West Australia's south-western corner where it prefers light soils in an open shaded position. It is drought resistant but dislikes frosts.
A perennial plant growing to a height of 15cm with a spread of 30cm; the stem is simple, unbranched and flowering; the leaves are a medium green, sickle shaped, smooth, tufted and stiffy hairy on the inner margin; the flowers are an orange-red and yellow, paw-like and obliquely tubular, appearing from winter to summer.
This plant has three subspecies; subsp. humilis, the most widespread and smallest of the subspecies with orange-red flowers; subsp. chrysantha has yellow flowers and is a rare subspecies from the Darling Ranges; subsp. grandis with much taller flower stems and yet to be recognised as a subspecies.
Propagation information available is contradictory. One reference says that it is difficult from seed and another says that it is easy and needs no pre-treatment. However, it then goes on to say that the plants are in evidence after bushfires which suggests that smoke treatment should be used in propagation.
Offered is a packet of 50 seeds complete with Grownotes to assist you in their propagation.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
