CEDAR BAY CHERRY - GOOD EATING AND A GREAT HEDGING SUBJECT.
GENUS EUGENIA REINWARDTIANA

Eugenia reinwardtiana, commonly known as the Cedar Bay Cherry occurs naturally in tropical and subtropical Queensland from Bundaberg to Cape York and in some Pacific islands. A rounded shrub that will form a tall shrub or small tree from 3 to 5 metres in height after many years. It is comparatively slow growing, but this is an excellent feature as it responds well to formative pruning to make excellent dense shrubs for low hedging and containers and is being widely promoted as a bush food or bush tucker species.

Leaves are shiny deep green, elliptical in shape up to 90mm long. New growth is pink maturing through lime green - an excellent feature of the plant. In cooler areas of south east Queensland the leaves will take on a reddish tone in winter, in response to the lower temperatures. It is not particularly frost tolerant.

Plants flower in spring to early summer with masses of white five petal flowers, featuring centrally clustered stamens each up to 15mm across. The flowers are followed in November and December (in Australia) by fleshy, red succulent spherical fruits from 7mm to 20mm diameter, enclosing a cherry like seed. Fruits mature from green through scarlet to cherry red and are very tasty - they rival the traditional cherry. Some specimens are sweeter than others.

Cedar Bay Cherry has been proven in cultivation in most areas of coastal subtropical and tropical Queensland, in either a sunny or partially shaded position. It prefers assured moisture, but will tolerate short dry periods. It is an excellent shrub that responds well to occasional pruning to produce a dense compact form for hedges. The succulent red fruits are wonderful 'bush tucker' and can be eaten raw, in fruit salads, with ice cream or made into jam, compotes or sauces.

Cedar By Cherry will grow from seed but germination may be slow and, as with all eugenias or lilly pillys the seed is at its best for only a limited time, perhaps 6 weeks from collection. It flowers and fruits quickly from seed.

This auction is for 15 fresh seed collected 8.08.2009. Item shipped by ordinary mail upon receipt of clear funds. Postage cost of 60 cents. ***Save 50% postage & handling on additional lots that are combined for shipment. As always our seed is fresh and professionally cleaned to give you the very best germination rate.

Feel free to email us with any queries.

Happy bidding.
