CEDAR OF LEBANON - ANOTHER FAVOURITE BONSAI SUBJECT
GENUS CEDRUS LIBANI

Cedrus libani, commonly known as Cedar of Lebanon, is a superb, classical evergreen cedar from the eastern Mediterranean Growing to some 30 metres in height it can have a similar spread. Found naturally in Turkey, Lebanon and Syriait has a recorded history stretching back to Biblical times and beyond.

Pyramidal while young it matures to become a stately tree with wide umbrella shape and very dense foliage. Branches are long and ascendant while young, then adopting a horizontal spread. It has short needles on short shoots in numerous stiff dark green tufts. It flowers in late winter to Spring and produces numerous erect and showy cones at the same time.

With its delightful form, horizontal branches and attractive small needles and cones it is a favourite bonsai subject.

It prefers full sun and moist, well drained to dry soil. Frost hardy and drought tolerant it is ideally suited to a mediterranean climate (hot dry summers and cool wet winters).
