Chart of Southeast Asia - 1542 - by French hydrographer Jean Rotz.

Jean Rotz, Hydrographer at Dieppe,France, transferred to the service of Henry VIII in 1542 and presented the King the "Boke of Idrography"which he had originally intended for Francis I of France. The eleven regional maps in the "Boke " are derived from a large world chart which Rotz, for convenience has transformed into a format of a book containing 'all hydrography or marine science '

It should be noted that the charts are arranged with South at the top' The chart of Southeast Asia shows the northern part of the land of Java, or Java-la-Grande as it was later known. Place names include 'Coste Dangerose ' which some authorities identify with the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. A vignette on the mainland of Asia depicts a procession of the Rajah of Ticou and a Sumatran hut, as observed on Jean Parmentier's expeditionfrom Dieppe,1529-1530. There is evidence to suggest that Rotz sailed on this voyage. Later Dieppe hydrographers, notably the author of the 'Vallard Atlas' 1547 depicted on Java - la -Grande similar but less accurate Sumatran scenes.

This chart or map is on a heavy art paper, it was published and produced for the 1988 block-buster exhibition "TERRA AUSTRALIS , the furthest shore" by The Art Gallery Of N.S.W. and is in mint condition as alway's stored flat in one of my print cabinets, the size is 24 x 30inc. or 610mm x 760mm, thank you for visiting and good luck when bidding, kind regards Paul
