"I love the unique blend of Irish and Indian style music of Celtic Ragas." - Paul McCartney

CELTIC  RAGAS

Featured Artist(s): Chinmaya Dunster & Vidroha Jamie

Condition: Brand New - Sealed

Running Time: 33:54 mins (Approx)

CD is from India - by Music Today

Description

Celtic Ragas is a musical love affair between Celtic and Indian instrumentation. The strings of Dunster's sarod and Jamie's guitar eloquently meld into rich, flowing melodies making the similarities between the musical traditions of these two cultures apparent.

Celtic Ragas features sarod player Chinmaya Dunster and guitarist Vidroha Jamie finding a surprisingly fertile common ground between Irish and Indian music. Dunster and Jamie, along with a group of musicians who play violin, percussion, flute, bass, and tanpura, create gentle soundscapes that range from the playful rhythms of "A Gypsy Tale" to the haunting, almost spooky beauty of "The Mists of Ruantallain." The arrangements are focused, and even on slow, meditative tracks like "Mere Hamsafar," the tempo never drags and the melodies don't meander. The mix of Indian and Irish elements works particularly well on "Tara," on which the buzzing, microtonal sound of the sarod meshes with the rhythms of a courtly dance and creates a sonic dream where the musicians of Ireland and India play in the castle of an ancient Celtic king. Dunster and Jamie describe Celtic Ragas as "Indo-Celtic chill-out music," a too-trendy term that nonetheless captures the essence of their soothing sound. --Michael Simmons

Review on Amazon

This engaging and often startingly beautiful instrumental CD speaks of an ancient kinship that links the Celts and the peoples of southern Asia. To be sure, it isn't easy to reconcile two very different musical traditions -- Celtic music emphasizes harmony, while Indian music emphasizes melody -- but these two very talented musicians (and an equally talented backup ensemble) explore the possible intersections in a number of intriguing ways. A wonderful CD to share for late-night snuggling, reflection or meditation, or serious listening with fellow musicians who wish to explore nuanced intersections between vastly different musical genres.

About Chinmaya Dunster

Born in 1954 in Kent, England in Chinmaya Dunster (né Stephen Dunster) attended the Kent Institute of Art and Design and pursued the independent study of classical guitar and composition throughout his adolescence and early twenties. After finishing his formal education in the late seventies, Dunster left europe, traveling through Afghanistan into northern India, where he became acquainted with classical Indian music and instrumentation. In 1979, in the north Indian city of New Delhi, he attended an all-night performance of the young sarod master, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and consequently spent the next thirteen years engaged in the study of the sarod both in London and India.

As Hindustani musical tradition dictates that knowledge of technique and tradition is generally handed down through from father to son, Dunster was initially challenged to find a teacher. Eventually he was to find a teacher in Pune, India, with Shekhar Borkar, a self-taught sarod player who had achieved the status of guru. In 1990, Dunster founded the east-west fusion band with Prem Joshua, Terra Incognita and released two albums under that name through New Earth Records. After several solo projects, Dunster then founded the Celtic Ragas Band, whose self-titled 2001 release (New Earth Records), attracted the favor of former Beatles member Sir Paul McCartney, who then invited Dunster to perform at his 2002 wedding to Heather Mills in Ireland. (source: wikipedia)

About Vidroha Jamie

Jamie's own family roots trace back to Ireland. Yet when he describes his arrival the first time in India as having the feeling of arriving home.

In 1979, abandoning a promising career in acting, Jamie traveled to India to embark on an exploration of meditation and personal growth. He lived in India for 12 years and began developing his own unique guitar style and melodic compositions blended with softer jazz chords and influenced by the experience of the Eastern meditation traditions he was exploring. Jamie is currently on the board of the Osho Meditation Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to meditation and personal growth in Boulder, CO. and performs in Boulder music for meditation and satsang when he isn't recording
