Basil

Characteristics - A tender annual herb with greenish or pink/white flowers and a powerfully aromatic scent. The name basil comes from the Latin meaning royal. One of the sacred herbs of India and widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Balancing, uplifting, refreshing, clarifying and focusing.
Properties & benefits - Very useful for clearing the head, and giving strength and clarity to the mind. Strengthens the respiratory system. Useful also for calming conditions of the digestive system.
Blends well with - bergamot, clary sage, geranium, lavender, lemon, lime
Cautions - Best avoided during pregnancy. Can also be a skin irritant for some people. Should only be use for skin application (baths, oils or lotions) if very well diluted. |

Clary Sage
Botanical Name - Salvia sclarea

Characteristics - short herb with large hairy leaves and tall flower spikes with small purple flowers. The herb was very popular during the middle ages, although less so now. Calming, uplifting and revitalising.
Properties & benefits - Useful for stress-related disorders, nervousness, weakness, fear, depression. Reduces tension and centres the thoughts. Considered a "creative" oil. Useful for uterine problems and often used during labour. May be useful for respiratory conditions such as asthma. Useful for greasy hair and dandruff.
Blends well with - bergamot & other citrus oils, cedarwood, frankincense, geranium, lavender, pine, sandalwood
Cautions - Should not be used during pregnancy. Also appears to aggravate the effects of drunkenness so should not be used while drinking alcohol. |

Frankincense
Botanical Name - Boswellia carterii

Method of Extraction - steam distilled Plant part - gum Country of Origin - Somalia
Characteristics - A small shrub, whose bark yields a resin when cut. The oil is distilled from the "tears" of resin. It has been used in religion since antiquity, and is still used today. It was very highly valued, hence it being one of the three gifts to the baby Jesus.
Properties & benefits - Slows breathing and calms the mind, making it excellent for meditation. Comforting and refreshing. These properties also make it useful for respiratory conditions. It is recommended for mature skin.

Characteristics - A perennial shrub with hairy leaves and small pink flowers. Also known as "rose geranium" due to its rosy aroma. Balancing effect.
Properties & benefits - Has a balancing effect on the nervous system, lifting the spirits and being particularly good for stress-related conditions. Also balances the skin, including the production of sebum, also good for encouraging healing of the skin.

Sweet Thyme
Botanical Name - Thymus vulgaris |
Linalool chemotype Method of Extraction - steam distilled Plant part - leaves and flowering tops Country of Origin - Spain
Characteristics - A perennial evergreen herb with small greyish-green leaves. Very long history of use. Used for embalming by ancient Egyptians and by ancient Greeks for medicinal purposes. The Romans used thyme to lift the spirits and promote bravery. This idea still persisted at the time of the Crusades. Used as a disinfectant with other oils, in hospitals until World War 1. Note that there are different chemotypes of Thyme. Essence of Wellbeing's Thyme Essential Oil is the Linalool chemotype.
Properties & benefits - Stimulating to the mind and useful for mental fatigue. Helps clear the mind and promote concentration. Useful for respiratory conditions, where it stimulates the immune system and calms.
Blends well with - bergamot, lavender, lemon, marjoram, pine, rosemary
Cautions - Little evidence of risk of skin sensitision with linalool chemotype. Other chemotypes of Thyme should be used with great caution as may be irritants |

Ylang Ylang Extra
Botanical Name - Cananga odorata

Method of Extraction - Steam distilled Plant Part - Flowers Country of Origin - Madagascar
Characteristics - A tall tropical tree with large fragrant yellow flowers. Flowers are spread on the beds of newly-weds in Indonesia. Also has a long history in hair care. The hair oil, macassar oil, popular in Victorian times, contained Ylang ylang oil. The oil is distilled in fractions, the first of which, "extra" is considered the best. The three further fractions are referred to as 1st 2nd and 3rd grade.
Properties & benefits - A very feminine oil, it has more admirers among women than men. It is a very calming oil and can help to slow breathing, soothes and relieves tension. Balancing action on hormones and also on sebum production making it useful on both oily and dry skin.
Blends well with - bergamot, sandalwood
Cautions - Use in moderation as excessive use may cause headaches or nausea. Generally considered non irritant, although there have been a few cases of sensitisation reported. |

General Methods of Use of Essential Oils -
Inhalation - 1-2 drops on a tissue or 3-4 drops in a bowl of warm water. (this method not to be used for asthmatics) Baths - 5-6 drops in a full drawn bath. Mix well just before getting in. Massage - add 2-3 drops to every 10ml of carrier oil
NB these dosages are for adults only. Do not use these concentrations on children. These are general guidelines only. Not all methods may be appropriate for all essential oils or for all individuals. Refer to the appropriate cautions for the individual essential oils before use. If in doubt as to appropriate oil, method of use or concentration, please consult a qualified aromatherapist for advice.

Due to the varying weights of different products and the varying postal charges, we suggest that if you are ordering 2 or more items that you wait to receive an invoice after you purchase and before you pay.
