Circa 1830 transitional STAYS with internal apertures

Kerry Taylor was the textile specialist at the World famous Southerbys for many years before forming her own company in association with Southerbys.

Approx twice a year she holds a 'PASSION FOR FASHION' sale at a central London venue. Items usually sell for thousands of pounds.

Her last 'Passion for Fashion' sale was held at La Galleria, Pall Mall, London. I was brave enough to buy two items, offered here for you today.

 This item is a corset or 'transitional stays'.

Dating from circa 1830's, it could be George lV or William.

I am going to quote Kerry Taylor, exactly as you will see in the invoice, which I will send with the item.

'Pair of heavy white calico transitional stays, 1830's, with top stitched gores to the breasts and hips, the back with metal eyelets and laces, with internal appertures for inserting bones & bust'

Hand stitched so wonderfully, the stays do indeed have slots internally, both wide and narrow, for the inserts stated.

I have taken close up photo's - the stays are in amazing condition and it is very difficult to believe they are so old.  Hence the very high bidding and rarity.

There is no damage. Very mild discolouration in a few places and a scattering of very light rust spots.

I have shown in the lining a brown smudge that I would love to think are the owners initials but it is too faded to be sure!

I think that the laces might be later replacements but they are completely in line with the colour of the garment.

An absolutely wonderful, shapely historic garment.
