What is it and what is it for?
This is a top-end ADSL modem with inbuilt router and 4-port 10/100 switch.
See here for more detailed information
What is included?
You get the modem and the power supply, a Cisco console cable, plus a standard phone (RJ-11/12) cable.
My photos usually show the complete contents of what is included in the auction. If you think something else that's not shown should be included, don't assume it is. Contact me via this site and ask before bidding.
The photo is of an item identical to that in this sale, but may not be the actual one I send you. It will not be any inferior to the photo.
If you're bidding internationally, note that any power cord/adaptor etc will be a standard Australian type. If this is a problem, contact me before bidding.
Condition
Cosmetic
Cosmetically, this is in good condition. It's not new so there are a few scratches, scuffs and marks on it. There may be remnants of labels on it. Of course, none of this affects its operation.
Functional
Functionally, I have tested it by connecting to the console port, observing the POST, and running it for a while, and it's working fine under those circumstances.
I'll give a 7-day DOA warranty. If it doesn't work 100%, I'll refund your money (less the postage) and pay for postage to return it. I can only offer this to buyers within Australia, but if an International buyer has a problem, I'm happy to negotiate.
Detailed information about the item
For an overview of features, have a look at:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/800/837/hardware/installation/guide/overview.html
The following is included in the document above:
"The Cisco 837 routers are asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL)-over-plain old telephone service (POTS) routing devices. They have an integrated 4-port Ethernet switch for the LAN and an ADSL physical interface for the WAN, allowing the routers to connect a corporate telecommuter or small office to corporate LANs and the Internet.
The routers support high-speed encryption, the10/100BASE-T switch, and dial backup functionality via the auxiliary console port. The autosensing function in these routers eliminates the need for a crossover cable and allows the router to detect medium dependent interface in normal mode (MDI) or medium dependent interface in crossover mode (MDIX) in any other PC or hub with a straight-through cable or a crossover cable. The routers are capable of bridging and multiprotocol routing between LAN and WAN ports.
The dial backup feature allows the user to connect an analog modem to the console port as a backup link to the WAN in case the ADSL service goes down. This feature gives the Cisco 837 routers a high level of performance and security.
The Cisco 837 router is designed with both hardware-based and software-based encryption. The Cisco 837 routers support the addition of Flash memory or DRAM, either as a factory upgrade or a field-installed option."
"Features
10/100BASE-T Ethernet switch
Provides connection to 10BASE-T (10-Mbps) or 100BASE-T (100-Mbps) Ethernet networks. Compatible with 10/100-Mbps devices.

Provides connection to ADSL network. Does not support auto-switch function.
Flash memory
8 MB of Flash memory; up to 16 MB of expandable Flash memory on the Flash module.
Synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
32 MB of SDRAM on board.
Ease of installation
Color-coded ports and cables reduce the chance of error.
Cisco IOS software
Supports Cisco IOS software.
LAN interface
Fully compliant with IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.3u. Automatic MDI/MDIX crossover function eliminates the need for crossover cables.
Cisco Router Web Setup
Provides a web-based software tool for basic configurations.
Console port
Provides connection to terminal or PC for troubleshooting and for software configuration using a command-line interface. This port is configured as a data communication equipment (DCE) port with the hardware handshake.
Dying gasp
Provides dying gasp function. If the router is about to lose power, this function detects the situation and sends a signal to warn the digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) about the impending line drop.
Wall-mounting feature
Brackets on the router bottom provide for mounting the router on a wall or vertical surface.
IPSec Hardware Accelerator
The Hifn 7902 security processor implements symmetric key encryption, public key encryption, authentication, and data compression in hardware. Algorithms implemented by the processor include Data Encryption Standard (DES) and Triple DES (3DES); Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1), Message Digest 5 (MD5), Hash-based Message Authentication Code (HMAC); and Lempel-Ziv-Stac (LZS) compression and Microsoft Point-to-Point Compression (MPPC)."

Shipping
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
Note about PayPal payments and shipping options
If using PayPal, the item must be sent with tracking as per PayPal seller protection requirements.
The minimum method for domestic shipping is Registered Post (not regular/Express).
For International shipping, it is Registered/Express Post International.
I prefer cash if the item is picked up. |
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Normal shipping costs within Australia are $12.50 (Registered Post) / $10.50 (Express Post) / $9.50 (Standard Post).
If you're paying by PayPal (see below for conditions), under their new rules, registered postage is required. It is also strongly recommended for any item over $50.
Postage may be a bit cheaper if you're close to Brisbane. Pickup (from Cannon Hill) is free. Contact me to check before bidding or paying if you want more details.
Internationally, choose your country in the calculator below to calculate total shipping costs for this item.
You will need to choose Registered/Express Post International for payment by PayPal.
Registered Post International is $7 more than the Air Mail postage cost shown above if the package is >500g. If it is lighter than this, please contact me for pricing before bidding.
See more detailed postage conditions below.
Postage costs can be combined on multiple items.
Payment
You can pay by
- direct deposit via Internet transfer
- PayPal - Registered Post (or equivalent) is required - see above.
- cheque on an Australian bank (but we'll have to wait until it clears before shipping - usually takes a week, even for bank cheques),
- Australian Money order,
- Australia Post COD (Australia only – buyer must have eBay rating >10 – buyer pays all fees) (not for fixed postage)
- pick up locally (Brisbane)
or any other method agreeable to both of us. Any payment method must be in Australian dollars, negotiable in Australia.
This is a private sale, so no GST is involved.
General conditions
International buyers are responsible for any customs duty, etc. I'll describe the item accurately on the customs declaration. You'll also need to confirm, before you bid, that the item is permitted to be imported.
Due to some bad experiences, I have had to block bidders from a couple of countries. If you find yourself in this situation, and you're serious, contact me and, if your rating is OK, I'll make the appropriate arrangement so you can bid.
If your eBay rating is 5 or less, please contact me before bidding. If you don't, I may cancel your bid.
Happy bidding. As always, don't bid unless you want to buy it. I always leave feedback (positive or negative).
Any questions, please contact me via this site.

OK ….. here’s the deal ….
What do I expect from you?
If you win the auction, I expect you to contact me within 3 days and arrange to pay within 7 days. I need you to provide me with a correct address for me to send the item. When you get the item and you’re happy with it, I’d appreciate feedback on the eBay site.
What can you expect from me?
I value my eBay rating and I have every intention of providing good value for you. I recognize that you’ve only seen a photo and read my description of the stuff you’re buying. I’m sure there are odd cases where I have omitted to put in something that you may consider important but I’ve just forgotten or maybe didn’t realize was important. You’ll only find this out when you get the stuff.
If there is some unforeseen discrepancy between what you’ve expected and what you get, I’ll usually refund your money. If it’s obviously my fault, I’ll also refund your postage. If it’s worthwhile, I’ll also pay for you to send it back. Note that this only applies to “unforeseen discrepancies”, i.e. it doesn’t cover things that were in the item description, or could be seen in the photo.
I’ll leave feedback on the eBay site for you. If all goes as well as it nearly always does, it will be positive. Only if someone doesn’t pay would I usually leave anything negative.
Shipping costs and details
The following applies unless I have specified shipping costs as being fixed (usually only within Australia). At the end of the auction, when I know your postcode, I’ll estimate the postage based on my measurements of weight and size of the parcel (as in the item description). I’ll add any handling charges and tell you how much it is likely to be. This will be based on best estimates. Sometimes, when I get to the Post Office, they’ll charge me slightly more or less. If it’s more, I’ll wear it. If it’s less, I’ll offer you a refund if the difference makes this worthwhile. If I know upfront, I'll send it in stamps with the item. If I find out after it's been packed, I'll transfer the money if it's above about $2.
I'll try to get the best pricing for postage (on your behalf) and that may sometimes mean that I need to slightly deface the packing (box, etc) of the item, for example by putting packing tape or an address label on it. If you want to keep the packing looking as pristine as possible (for example, if you plan to resell it, or give it as a gift), please tell me if you buy it and I'll pack it differently. Packing or postage costs may be slightly different in this case. Again, please ask first if this is likely to be a problem.
