This is a hand made barrette from Bali.

Beautifully made, this decorative barrette looks exquisite as well as being functional. The natural coconut shell is variegated in colour and the lovely boomerang design is done by batik! A lovely pin for those who like unusual natural things, and they also make a wonderful gift for others.

The barrette measures 4.5 cm high x 9 cm long, the pin 14.7 cm long, and weighs 18 g. It is made from coconut shell, a wonderful and very useful and prolific natural resource in both Java and Bali! The design on the shell is hand made by the intricate art of Batik, which is now applied to wood and coconut shell and not just material. Each dot is hand dotted – it is a meticulous, very labour intensive and very beautiful art form. (Included is a photo of part of the wax 'writing' part of the pre-dyeing process. This product is made in Yogyakarta in the southern hills district which relies on their handicrafts for a living as the soil is dry and unproductive. We buy direct from the makers as we used to live there and have many family connections – resulting in fantastic prices for you!
