Common Wormwood, Mugwort or Absinthe
Artemisia absinthium
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
A semi-woody, clump forming, perennial sub shrub with silvery grey, aromatic foliage. This plant grows to 0.75 metres high with a similar spread, it is well branched, has much divided leaves and both branches and leaves are clad in silky, silvery hairs. The dull, yellow flowers are small and almost inconspicuous.
Artemisia absinthium is native the the Mediterranean region or europe and Asia where it grows in dry, rocky, waste places. It needs well-drained soils but makes few other demands on the gardener. It is drought and frost hardy (USDA zones 4 - 9) and does well in full sun or part shade. It is not well adapted to humid climates and will be short lived in humid climates.
This is an excellent garden plant for rockeries or flower beds and makes an excellent backdrop for brightly coloured flowers.
This is the plant from which the drink Absinthe was made which was much in favour during the 19th and early 20th century. Absinthe went out of fashion when it was thought to cause mental illness, it is now gaining popularity again.
It should be noted that all parts of the plant are very toxic and attempts to make home grown Absinthe are dangerous. The plant is extremely bitter and accidental ingestion be youngsters has never been a problem.
