The book is derived from articles in the series Australia's Heritage edited by Rex Rienits, the distinguished Australian historian. It traces the history of the early convict settlements in New South Wales, Norfolk Island, and Van Dieman's Land from 1788 to the mid-1830s.
The book is highly illustrated with photographs, engravings and drawings, some even by convict artists.
