Measures 153 X 122, acrylic, gold leaf and lacquer on canvas. An important early work by a contemporary Yorta Yorta aboriginal artist from Mildura Victoria. Titled on verso. The painting is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Western Desert Aboriginal Art Pty Ltd. Award-winning artist Craig Allan Charles is one of a new breed of younger Aboriginal artists departing from more traditional techniques in favour of a very contemporary style, while still paying homage to his ancestors and telling important cultural stories. He uses layers of thick acrylic paint, gold leaf and earth with a lacquered finish, capturing the landscapes of the Mhutti Mhutti region (his land on his father's side) and Yorta Yorta (on his mother's side). Craig Allan Charles was a finalist in the Telstra Award in 2008, and winner of the NGV Acquisitive Prize in 2007. His work is featured on the cover of Bunjilaka, a publication of the Melbourne Museum. |
