Craig Lowndes 'PRODIGY' tribute

The 2006 Bathurst 1000 race was billed as the home coming of the King of the Mountain, a resting place for the recently passed Aussie V8 Group A Touring Car Legend, Peter 'Perfect' Brock. In order to pay tribute and respect to the legend race organisers commissioned a brand new trophy named in Brocky's honour, which was to be presented to the winner of this annual event.

Those who were there would still remember the verbal tributes by drivers, family and friends and the passing parade of Brocky's past winning cars with the honour of driving Brocky's Torana left to Craig Lowndes. Brocky was Craig's idol and Lowndes was Brocky's 'Prodigy'.

There would be no more fitting tribute then if Craig Lowndes could manage to win this historical event and become the first driver to place his name on the trophy struck in his idols honour! The weather was perfect, the cars we ready and the crowd was at record capacity. This was going to be a day to remember no matter who crossed the line first. Exit stage left the script writers because no body would dare cast or write such a deliberate ending.

The race started with a bang, literally, with young Jack Perkins gone within 600m of the start. As the day wore on the attrition rate grew and joining Jack Perkins was race favourite, Mark Scaife after a bingle at the top and Paul Radisich after his high speed off at the Chase. This left the door wide open for a classic finish.

Lowndes and Whincup would amazingly remain trouble free for the entire day, as did the Kelly gang and their Holden. Who would win? Could Lowndes honour his hero with the ultimate tribute or would Todd and Ricky Kelly win one for Holden Lion, Brock's badge of honour. With only a couple of  handfuls of laps to go the safety was deployed and the cars bunched up again. What happened next was the enthralling, with the lead cars only a few car lengths apart, Craig Lowndes fittingly brought the Blue Oval Ford, Triple 888 Betta Electrical Racing Car home to secure the most Historic of all wins at the Mountain. There wasn't a dry eye in the place as the presentation took place and Lowndes himself holding back the tears. What a day and what a lasting memory.
 
I was lucky enough to be trackside that day and Photographed the event. Apart from taking many shots that day, the prized photo for me was Craig Lowndes exiting the Chase for the final time with a 5-6 car length lead over the Kelly piloted Holden.  No matter where your loyalties lay in the branding war, every person was exceedingly happy that Craig Lowndes was the victor.

'PRODIGY' is the aptly named title of this artwork, which of course pays tribute to the passing of a Legend, Peter Brock, and then acknowledges the new peoples champion, Fords #888 Racing driver Craig Lowndes.
