I picked this up a few months ago at an electronics store thinking I needed lots of USB connectivity for my old server.   I have now bought a new server which has 7 USB ports onboard.  I used this hub for a while but I don’t really need it because I only really use 3 or 4 USB devices (mouse, UPS, USB keys and sometimes a digital camera) regularly and with 7 ports on the server I’m just cascading USB ports for no good reason.

 

I packed it up to put it on the shelf and then thought “it just going to collect dust for a few years” so I might as well offer it to somebody who can benefit from it.

 

Dlink are one of my favourite brands (especially in the networking space) but USB hubs are pretty generic these days.  Works great.  It works both with power supplied from the power adapter and unpowered (drawing power from the computer)  but obviously if your aggregate power requirement from all plugged in devices exceeds 500mA then you need to have it plugged in.   I ran it unplugged initially with just the mouse and the UPS monitor plugged in but plugged it in when I was using some portable USB hard drives.
