Dragon Force is beginning to see a resurgence in the past few years, as gamers begin to discover classic gaming, in  particular that of the Saturn, and young RPGers are finding older games that helped to structure modern games.

This is arguably the best tactical RPG game to be released ever. If you were a serious Saturn gamer, you owned or played this game. The game starts out simply enough. The continent of Legendra is being engulfed in war as rivaling nations compete for power. Taking on the lead of one of eight nations, you attempt to unite the nations together and find the 'chosen' Dragon warriors who will unite to take on an ancient god that is slowly being released from captivity.

The game is heavily menu based, and get ready to study the instruction manual a bit. There are basically three 'action' areas. The first is obviously the world map, where you and the other nations move about and engage one another in real time. The second is the actual fighting scenes, where up to 202 characters run around fighting. Finally, the third element comes in domestic matters that are completed at the end of each 'turn,' where you carry out duties like fortifying structures and awarding generals.

The world map scene is considered one 'turn'. It's timed, and so you must carry out all orders quickly, because other nations are doing the same. Basically, you (usually) start out with one castle and five generals. With this, you group generals and their soldiers together, and move about invading other castles and towns. When you encounter enemy commanding generals, you go into combat. This is where the tactical aspect of the game plays out because some soldiers are better against certain types and weaker against others, so usually you want to group generals that have a variety of different troops under commend (Three generals with calvary, mages, harpies, in one platoon for example.). Finally, after the 'turn' is completed you are given an overview of what transpired and are able to act domestically without a time limit.

That all sounds good right? So then, what's the big problem? There has to be one, right? Well no... there isn't really. That's what sets this game apart from almost anything around at the time, or anything created since then. This game probably has one of the longest story lines in an RPG. Imagine a standard RPG playing time, now multiply that times eight, and then add in strategy elements. That gives you approximately how long it takes to fully experience Dragon Force.

Even now, this game is still an incredible plunge into the strategy-RPG genre that gives any Saturn owner a reason for their console not to collect dust. And if you have never owned a Saturn then this game alone is enough of a reason to purchase one, as it is the only way to experience one of the best games ever created!
