Women's dress, women's writing, women's bodies, women's work, woman as portrayed by themselves and others in literature and the arts:  these are among the topics addressed in this wide-ranging collection of essays written by scholars working in a number of different areas of Chinese studies.  Until recently, academic studies of Chinese women inhabited the more exotic reaches of sinology.  The present volume is a contribution to a body of scholarship which over the past ten years has succeeded in transforming the field.
 
The contributors are from disciplines ranging from anthropology to socio-linguistics, media studies, literary criticism, social history and the fine arts.  Each has presented a case study from his or her own research.  The result is a volume of thirteen chapters offering fresh perspectives on gender as an analytical tool, many in fields where the participant has undertaken significant or pioneering research based on firsthand material.
 
In their introduction, the editors pose a question central to the analysis of Chinese society in the late twentieth century:  how are contemporary Chinese men and women reshaping constructions of gender roles in a time of dramatic social and economic transformation?  Some of the essays in this book focus directly on this question.  All contribute to an understanding of its significance.
