DURAN DURAN - THE REFLEX / NEW RELIGION - AUSSIE 12" VINYL SINGLE

Grading: Record NM- / Cover VG+
Country: Australia
Label: EMI
Catalogue: ED78
Year: 1984

Duran Duran are an English rock band notable for a long series of popular singles and vivid music videos. They were the most commercially successful of the New Romantic bands and a leading band in the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the United States.[citation needed] Since the 1980s they have placed 21 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 and 30 in the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, and have sold more than 85 million records.

"The Reflex" is the eleventh single by Duran Duran, released worldwide on April 16, 1984. The song was heavily remixed for single release and was the third and last to be taken from their third album Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

"The Reflex" became the band's most successful single. It was their second single to top the UK singles chart, after "Is There Something I Should Know?" in 1983, and would prove to be their last UK #1. It was also Duran Duran's first single to hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (for two weeks) on 23 June 1984 (see 1984 in music), and became a huge hit internationally. The band wanted it to be the lead single from Seven and the Ragged Tiger, but their label didn't like the warbling singing during the "why don't you lose it" segments, thinking this would hinder its success as a stand alone single track.

The remixes for both the 7" and 12" singles were done by Nile Rodgers, of Chic fame. It was his first work with the band, and he would later go on to produce "The Wild Boys" single as well as the album Notorious (1986) and several tracks on Astronaut (2004).

Producer Ian Little recalls the sound Nick Rhodes came up with on his Roland Jupiter-8 keyboard: "...whenever I hear that steel-drum part it always brings a smile to my face because it's so out of tune. Steel drums always are, but it was exactly right in terms of rhythm and tone. So a wood-block sound was mixed in to make it even more percussive and, Bob's your uncle, it did the job."

Despite the label info claiming this track was released in 1983, this remixed version was released in the Spring of 1984.

RECORD GRADING:

ALL my records have been listened to, and are audibly and visually graded so that you can buy with confidence. The system I use is based on the US GOLDMINE system and is the most commonly used worldwide. Your order will include a grading sheet which will note anything of significance. I do try to honestly and conservatively grade my vinyl but please let me know if you disagree.

Still Sealed (SS): Record has never been opened.
A record that has never been opened is assumed to be as new.
However as it can't be listened to or graded there is no real certainty as to its condition.

Near Mint (NM): No surface noise.
A nearly perfect record. There may be one or two small inaudible defects. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other sights of slight handling. An LP jacket should have no creases, folds, seam splits or any other noticeable similar defect. No cut-out holes, either.

Near Mint (NM-): No surface noise.
A record that should play mint but has a few slight visible marks. The album will have as much luster as an NM, there just may be some scuffs from the sleeve or very light scratches that shouldn't be audible. An NM- album cover subjectively fits somewhere in between VG+ and NM.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Signs of wear but no significant surface noise.
A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don’t affect one’s listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned-up corners, or a slight seam-split. An LP jacket may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.

Very Good (VG): Surface noise evident on playing, especially in soft passages, and during a song's intro and fade, but never overpowers the music.
Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc.
Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and
fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light
scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by
writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or
LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, just two or three of them.

Good (G): Significant surface noise, scratches that will produce noise, but will play without skipping.
Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play though without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear.
A jacket or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the subject.

Poor (P), or Fair (F): Won't play through without skipping or repeating.
The record is cracked, badly warped, and won’t play through without skipping or
repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and writing. The LP jacket barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, crinkled, and written upon.
