This is a first and thorough study of the early De Havilland designs. Each aircraft lavishly illustated. The outstanding success of the Mosquito in the Second World War has tended to overshadow acknowledgement of the earlier De Havilland aircraft. This unfortunately has been exacerbated by the general dearth of literature on the war in the air during the First World War, with the result that there is little recognition of the great contribution the De Havilland aircraft company made. The innovative quality that gave the Mosquito its mystique was present right from the first days of the company, as their early designs achieved similar success. The need for a definitive study of these earlier designs requires an author of quality, and in the realm of First World War aviation historians there are few to equal J. M. Bruce. In the main due to enthusiasm and a long-held interest in the field of 1914-1918 aircraft, he has produced this fine and thorough study of the early De Havilland designs. The technical detail is certainly unparalleled and extends to an individual squadron deployment of each type throughout the war years; and each aircraft is lavishly illustrated in unique, high-quality photographs and reproductions of the original De Havilland technical drawings.
