This charming doll is Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein and the mother of science fiction. Shelley was the daughter of famous feminist scholar Mary Wollstonecraft, and the wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. In 1816, while spending the summer with friends including the legendary poet Lord Byron, Mary Shelley began the novel Frankenstein, a classic work of gothic literature. Mary is pictured here in a dark burgundy and apricot crinoline gown, with a gold locket around her neck, and holding a copy of her masterpiece.
